Illinois Farm Girl

a mother's perspective on farm life & farm kids

A Day of Spring Firsts

April 26, 2014

Today was a good day of firsts.  After the longest winter ever (so says the farm princess), I think we deserved a day of firsts.  From our first spring flowers . . .

Tulips

. . . to the first mower run . . .

Not many things will keep the farm boy out of the field, but mowing lawn seems to be better than planting corn for him.

Then we joined Nana, Papa, cousins and uncles in the field for the first field meal of 2014.

This afternoon we planted our first rows in the garden.

Onions

And finished off the day with dinner, including the first asparagus plucked from the garden and the first rhubarb pie.

Dad would find asparagus in fence rows and bring it home as a surprise. Tonight, the kids and I picked direct from the garden. The first asparagus of the season and the first pick from the garden.

Exhausted and happy farm boy and farm princess voluntarily went to bed – another first.
